“Is it so hard to say her name?” Apollo asked. “I think a few minutes ago was the first time you’ve said her name since after you two fought Ares.” My jaw ached from how hard I was grinding my molars. “Whatever,” Apollo said, his attention returning to the godsforsaken ceiling fan chain. “Don’t talk about it. Be the best issues-boy you can be.” I took a deep breath. It didn’t help. “I don’t have issues.” He tipped his head back and roared with laughter. Paintings of the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains rattled. “You have more baggage than United Airlines. Cross that out. You have more issues than Medusa, and that woman makes the inside of a cat lady’s thoughts seem like a calming place.” “I hate you.”
 “You wound me straight to the heart, bud.”
 My patience was just about the same as that of Cerberus after someone tried to take a squeaky toy away from him. “What about the girl, Apollo?” He dropped down into the leather chair, his large form nearly swallowing it. “It’s a long story.” “Go figure.” That comment went largely ignored. “It all started with your birth, so there’s something else you can add to your mountain of suck.” I wondered if there was an anti-god repellent and where I could find it. “We knew the moment you were born that there would be the possibility of a God Killer, since Alexandria was on schedule to make an appearance a few years later. We didn’t know who among us was responsible for your birth, but we knew they’d want to use you for their own gain.” “This walk down history lane is boring me.” I crossed my arms. Unaffected, he eased himself closer to the bed, kicked his booted feet up on it, and stretched out leather-clad legs. “The risk of you two joining forced us to come up with a contingency plan in case the proverbial poo hit the fan.” My brows knitted. There was something wrong with hearing Apollo use the word “poo” in a sentence.

My Review

***Disclaimer*** I was provided a free copy of this book in return for an honest review from Little Brown Book Group.

I was dubious at first when i sat down to read this book. I was worried that i would feel that I had missed out on reading the previous books and would not be able too engage with the characters and engage with the story as much as i like to. However this was not the case the book works well as a standalone. Although at times I did feel like I would have liked too know the characters a little bit better. It did not affect my enjoyment of the book however. The author gave us enough too look back into Eve's past that we felt like we knew the characters without having read the past books.

The characters for the most part were well varied and likeable in their own ways. Eve is tough as nails and after falling out of love with quite a few of my favourites in this genre. i might have found a possible replacement. I certainly would like to start at the beginning and see how the characters have grown and find out more about Eve and Rourke.

The book is extremely well written, I did find myself at first struggling too get too grips with the authors writing style for the most part. However I did eventually begin to like it. The writing seemed a lot like Eve quite direct and straight to the point. The plot is well thought out and full of twists and turns leaving you guessing. Especially abot who Eve's murderous secret admirer is. One of the best points to the book for me was the little pieces from the murderer's POV, so so creepy I often had too pause myself from reading. 

Another saving grace is that the book is full of action and moves quickly. You follow every piece of the investigation, in such detail you feel like your part of the investigation team. I also liked that the book was set in the future, I do not often read books like these and the first crime one i have read like this.

An intriguing, interesting read perfect for fans of crime,mystery and thrillers. It will keep you guessing and will be surprised if you guess who the murderer is before Eve and the gang do. I didn't.

Walters: Thank you for assembling on such short notice. I realize how extraordinary it is to be called from your beats, but this is pretty extraordinary. I’d like to start by taking a moment to lower our heads for Officers Herrera and Nguyen, killed in the line of duty.

Officer Julie Conklin: Sir, what are those things?

Walters: If you’ve seen Lady Firebird’s video, you know as much as I do. She’s calling them “Possessed.” That’s important, people—remember, it’s not grandma any more, or your buddy from down the street. I know how much it hurts to think of them as walking lasers in a meat wrapper, but that’s basically what they are at this point.

Officer Frank Lee: Why here? I mean, why Detroit, not that I want them to be blowing up the 7th District or anything.

Walters: We’re not sure. She said something about those things trying to destroy the purest among us. Maybe there’s some really pure nuns or rabbis or imams in our district. I don’t know. But I do know that they’re here, and we have to do what we can to protect our citizens.

Officer Jennifer Maiz: But they can shoot through anything—cars, body armor, buildings, you name it. What are we supposed to do?

Walters: I’m getting to that Maiz. I just got off the phone with Sergeant Hector Godinez in California. He’s the detective who’s got Lady Firebird on speed dial. He says that any minute now, we can expect a couple of her…I dunno what the hell they are. I think he called them “Marzipan”—

Officer John Dunn: I think it’s “Mazzikim,” sir.

Walters: Thanks, Dunn. We’re getting a couple of those in a minute or two. They’re bringing specially treated shields, swords, and bows and arrows they say can protect against the blasts and hurt the possessing spirits inside. I don’t suppose we have any sword and bow experts in our precinct, do we?

Officer Brent Jeffers: I go bow hunting with my cousins up north sometimes, does that count?

Walters: Right now it does, thanks Jeffers. You and any others who have training, you’ll try to take out those Possessed things. The rest of us will try and clear out as many citizens as we can, and if you’ve got a clear shot, go for their eyes—that won’t kill them, but it will keep ‘em from firing at us. Then we can take ‘em out with swords.

Officer Gill Fernandez: How, sir?

Walters: Well, I’m not an expert, but I think we need to stick them with the pointy end.

Fernandez: Yes, sir.

Intercom: Sir…I…we…there’s two large beings at the counter right now. One looks like a gorilla with an alligator head, and the other some kind of bear with a tiger head. They’ve got huge bags over their shoulders, that firebird lady’s symbol on their shirts, and they’re…they’re talking, sir. They’re asking to see you…What do we do?

Walters: Okay officers, we’re up. Everyone grab a shield, and lets get these Possessed. Keep safe, and let’s hope that Lady Firebird knows what she’s talking about.

Holly climbed out of the plush chair and gingerly walked across the soft carpet. Grasping the metal handle, she opened the closet door with a flourish and pulled out the suitcase. Flapping it open, she began arranging all her clothes haphazardly. Lucky for her, it was a big suitcase. When she’d bought it, she knew the size would come in handy one day; she just never thought that it would be used for this.
Pausing in her frantic packing, she fell back onto the white carpet, letting her hair swirl around her, reflecting the tornado of emotions swirling inside her. How could he have done this to her? They’d had so many dreams. They could have been such a great couple, if he would have just kept his dick in his pants. Heaven knew she loved Brandon, but she refused to marry Donna, too.
Tears began streaming down her cheeks, leaving a hot path that burned into her very soul. She inhaled deeply, trying not to lose it as she pushed her hair back. She knew that as soon as his Audi pulled into the driveway, he was going to start with his begging again. Especially now; a week before the big day.
She had to stand her ground. She owed it to herself, and deserved so much more than a two-timing whore! Yes, if women were called whores when they did it, men could be labeled in the same manner.

     “You know what? Eat what you want to eat. Hell, eat Donna for all I care.” Angrily, she punched the red disconnect button on the screen.
Her phone rang again a second later; the same picture flashed on the screen. “What do you want, Brandon?”
“You okay?” he asked.
“Am I okay?” She gave her ‘you’re unbelievable’ giggle, wanting to switch the phone off yet again. I’m so sick and tired of playing this game with him. “No, I’m not, but I will be, Brandon,” she bit his name out with pure venom.
He cussed. “Is it that time of the month again?”
“You know what? Go fuck yourself. I can’t do this anymore… you, you sleaze ball, and two-timing piece of shit.” She took a deep breath. “I’m leaving you. And I think it’s better we do this now, than waste two years of our lives with each other.”
“Just wait for me, Holls, okay? I’ll be right there. I love you baby.”

  Isabella White was born and raised in South Africa, where she still lives with her husband and two beautiful little girls. She always knew she was going to be a writer, but it only started to really happen about four years ago. Review

I was so excited when I saw that there was going to be some books based on The Originals, I love the show and enjoyed The Vampire Diaries books. However I was skeptical that this book would live up to the show and my high expectations esp as the characters were derived from the vampire diaries and first seen in the show before getting their own spin off series. This book is the first of three a prequel to the tv series. I shouldn't have been. I could not put it down it was just so good. 

Even if you do not know much about the Mikaelson family the book does a good job on catching them up on their history.  With Julie Plec (the creator of the show) at the helm it is not a surprise that the characters in the book match their tv counterparts. Considering their situation and their history I still find it so interesting how different they are. Throughout the book we have chapters from Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah as they go about their own different missions to help cement New Orleans as their home. Of course each has situations that lead to trouble and misfortune, after all the Mikaelson family never have things all that easy.

Often bringing it upon themselves.

I was surprised to enjoy each of the POV's and their individual storylines. I am a huge Klaus fan (Who isn't?) and admire Elijah's qualities and his old fashioned ways, however Rebekah i usually have a hard time liking. I found them all to be reliable narrators and was glad that I got to dip in and out of each of their heads. I found Elijah in particular enjoyable to read, It was nice to see inside his head and understand his thinking more. 

The writing is not the best and not as well polished as some people may like, however this did not detract from my enjoyment in any way.There is plenty going on to keep you interested even with a slightly slow start. There is action, scandal, romance , betrayal and more than a few bitter sweet and heartbreaking moments. By the time I got to 70%, I was willing myself to read slower, I just did not want it to end. I cannot wait for the next instalment.

I would recommend this book to fans of The Vampire Diaries or The Originals shows. Even if you have not watched The Originals show i think you would enjoy it.
