Pen Wars - Collab Challenge #1

Hi, everyone! It's Rinny. So I have something new and exciting today. As teased on the facebook page It's Pen Wars. For years I followed Liana Marcel an amazing artist/crafter on facebook. Recently she has revamped and is finally following her dreams of becoming an author. She is working on finalizing her first book 'Just Rose'. Anyway, we have been chatting and I after i read her writing challenge from last week. I was inspired and fancied trying one myself. It then snowballed and I thought it would be cool to do a collab style one. I spoke to Leanne and she was as excited and Pen Wars was born.

Leanne has already posted her fab story based on our created challenge. Click the image below to go read it and make sure you follow her. She really does have great posts and she is super talented.

also, check out her Facebook and Twitter

Pen Wars

So now to explain the Pen Wars Challenge.

It is a writing challenge, based on one single prompt that we both have to interpret in our own way. We decided upon a visual prompt rather than written and after much mulling, over images we settled on one that we both could work with. I would just like to mention I am not a writer, and have not done anything like this before. I hope you like my story, please comment your thoughts and if we inspire you show us your story.

Rules

  • Aim to write 1,500 - 2,000 words max
  • based on 1 prompt (this week is a visual prompt)
  • 1 writing session
  • must include reference to the prompt
  • NO prior planning
  • No editing till the end and only minor. No story revisions

No time for love

Brooke, pull yourself together, no one knows I kept chanting the mantra over and over in my head under the stares of the others.  They weren’t staring maliciously or even suspiciously and were even expected under normal circumstances. If only they knew the truth nothing about this situation was normal!  The worried, concerned looks of sympathy were only making me feel even more anxious, my stomach tying itself in knots, beads of nervous sweat running down my spine, as I tried to play my role. Perhaps I hadn’t helped myself, Perhaps I should have dressed up I mean jeans and a burgundy woollen jumper did not scream funeral never mind grieving girlfriend and my green parka jacket didn’t help matters more functional than formal, more discount mall than runway chic I thought. Fiddling with my grandmother’s ring, I imagined just what the good old folks of Mallowpine would be saying to each other Poor child, look at her, I think it has twisted her mind, awful business losing a love so young especially after so little time.  Her internal monologue continued warring with itself, a child! I’m twenty-one! Stuff them they don’t know the truth, they couldn’t see that although my grief was somewhat real, I wasn’t broken, I’d never be broken, I couldn’t allow myself to.

The bitter cold breeze sweeping the eerie graveyard broke through my thoughts blowing my blond curls back, huddling deeper into my jacket and gipping the dainty pink rose harder between my grasp relishing the pain from the thorns digging into my skin. Pain, I knew pain, better than most how it feels, how it works winding into your every being mind, body and soul and how to cause it. Focusing on the familiar feeling I forced myself to drag my attention back to what was happening around me, the people huddled solemnly, friends of the family and Logan. His family sat beside his future grave and his pale blue coffin, in various states of grief. Of course I stood alone, I didn’t blame them though they didn’t know it this was all my fault or really know me I had only moved here a couple of months ago, not that it mattered after what was coming next I would be moving on, another town, perhaps a different country the South of France is nice this time of year right?

The reverend was just finishing up his sermon, when I finally managed to bring myself into the here and now.  The coffin was lowered by a group of Logan’s friends as his siblings comforted his parents, each holding the ropes with the same strength and their eyes all gathering shiny wet tears amongst their faces still in serious expressions.  People began moving forward to place their offerings into the open grave and say their final goodbyes.  A small moment of amusement breaking the tension when Jared, Logan’s mischievous best friend tipped in a basket full of marbles and toy soldiers, a nod to their private little joke. His siblings placed carefully drawn pictures, others carefully placing flowers or notes. His parents approached together leaning on each other for strength, silent tears ran down his mother Martha’s cheeks as together they gave their son their last gift his favorite red cap and the gold cross they had bought him for his now not upcoming birthday.  They paused as people began to disperse for the wake, saying their own goodbyes.  I hadn’t known them long but they were good people, they didn’t deserve this.

I waited wanting to respect their grief, staring at the ground. A hand touched my shoulder and I had to ignore my natural instincts to strike out. Looking up, I found myself staring into the grief ridden eyes of Martha.
‘ Honey, you okay? It’s your turn take your time. We’re all heading back for the wake now. We’ll see you there?’
I froze before replying choosing my words carefully ‘Um … thanks, I’m so sorry.’
‘It’s not your fault ….. He loved you very much you know’ she said her voice full of sympathy
‘I loved him too’ I automatically replied in a whisper.
She smiled sadly, pulling me into a short but sweet hug before walking away to join her husband. I wished I could tell her; would it bring closure? Or just fear. She wouldn’t see me again; I wouldn’t be at the wake my night was already planned. I slowly walked forward aware of the bored men leaning on their shovel wanting to get the ‘job’ done and back to their warm homes where their families waited. Again my internal monologue spoke up You can do this, just get it over and done with, you were never made to love, you have bigger things to do.  It didn’t stop my breath quacking, my heart from hurting, grief rolled over me as tears ran down my cheeks soaking my jumper. This maybe wrong, this shouldn’t have happened but the emotions hitting me were real like a tidal wave they brought me to my knees. Losing all sense of time, I began sobbing, muttering for forgiveness, telling him how he was stupid but how I would always love him, he would never be forgotten. I had learned my lesson no one, will get this close to me again, no one will die for me again. I dropped the rose and pushed myself to my feet, turning I stalked off towards the woods where my home away from home awaited.

I had set up camp close to the edge of the graveyard, my trusty camouflage wind tent. It wasn’t ideal in this cold weather but better than being stuck in the guest house with its nosey old landlady and the pink flowery walls, so not me I grimaced at the thought, a few miles away. I grabbed my flask and hunkered down under the thin worn cream blanket I had brought along. It was going to be a long night and I was already weary. As minutes turned into hours and the sky began to darken, I praised the academy for its training. Nothing like being forced into dark rooms filled with obstacles over and over to get you as used to the dark, well as used to it as you can with human eyes. I no longer feared it, it comforted me like a cup of hot cocoa, it’s dark arms wrapped around me as if I was being embraced by a loved one. Thinking of the academy brought back flashbacks of training, hours of teachings and even more spent hunched over boring lore tombs. I had only been eleven when my mother had pulled her aside one evening to tell me the family ‘secret’, what I would become, the sacrifices I would have to make. For hours after I had sat still on the edge of my little bed in shock, the walls of my childhood home felt like they were closing in on me as my mother bustled around me gathering my things and packing them into my tiny suitcase as if I was going on holiday.  No such luck, I was being packed off to Steelbriar Academy where I would be trained, my skills honed and if I was ‘lucky’ become a member of The Krieger Society, a group of individuals born to the founding families through the generations who supposedly battled the monsters from my nightmares.
Unfortunately for me it was all true. I was a warrior whose main focus in life was meant to be vanquishing darkness. A reluctant warrior, I thought. I knew that what I was doing was important, honourable, just and well … needed. However, it was also dangerous, lonely and lately difficult. And the society was going to be pissed, I’d messed up big time. An innocent was harmed.

That single thought was like a wrecking ball crashing through my mental walls. Mental images flew past my mind’s eye. My phone call from my superior, the long road trip to Mallowpine, bumping into Logan in the local bar where she had picked up a couple of shifts. His intense blue eyes flecked with green, his dark cropped hair and tall frame blocking the way when a drunk had started causing trouble.  It had been sweet but laughable I mean me needing protection! I’d took down demons, werewolves, vampires and creatures that no one would even be able to process imagining. More images rushed through my mind, his relentless pursuing of me, me finally agreeing to a date thinking that I would botch it up so bad he would give up, our first date, more dates, first kiss and more all flashing through.

Then the last image, the worst the one I had kept locked away for the past few nights. Logan screaming, blood pouring from a wound in his neck while the blood from another poured into his throat. I heard my own screams echoing in my head. I saw myself rushing forward my weapon drawn, I could feel the fury rolling off me as my soul shattered the same time the monster broke his neck. Before Logan’s body hit the floor my stake drove home into the monster’s chest crunching its way through bone and muscle to the chamber where it’s heart should have been beating as the thing burst into flames and turned to dust.  Time flashed forward showing myself crouched over Logan, crying steeling myself for what had to happen next. I kissed his cheek, and closed his eyes and then went to work ripping his clothes hiding the distinctive marks making them look like they’d been caused by an animal. Then walking away feeling my heart break more as I left him to be found. It had to be done this way but it felt like a piece of me was dying.

My head snapped up breaking my train of thought. My instincts had kicked in. Straining my ears, I listened closely. I heard the familiar scraping and banging of flesh on wood. It was time. I got up picking up my hand carved stake, I started moving back towards the graveyard. Moving faster, trees hitting me in the face as I ran past as I heard the noise of dirt shifting. As I broke through the trees I saw a hand break the surface quickly followed by another and then he was pulling himself out the grave. My beautiful Logan his wounds healed, his beautiful features twisted into the face of my enemy and his once intense eyes now dark and dead of emotion. My breath left my chest, pausing for just a second before moving closer. He had now gathered himself to a standing position, he seemed to be scanning the area. His eyes settled on me.
‘Brooke? …. What’s going on? Why was I in a grave. This is Jared isn’t it. Come out you big loon. This isn’t funny. I … don’t feel right. What is going on?’ he sounded different his voice huskier and deeper.
My adrenalin kicked in and I withdrew into myself going on pilot mode. I moved up to him my arm behind my back.
‘It’s okay Baby everything’s going to be okay.’ I heard myself say in a sweet voice.
He reached out to embrace me and I moved solely based on my training and instinct, I raised my arm the stake shooting forward, catching him by surprise and as it hit home and his body turned to dust. The soft breeze carried him away and I whispered my voice breaking,
‘I love you.’

***Rinny Reviews*** The Originals : The Rise by Julie Plec

*** Disclaimer *** - I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis

Family is power. The Original vampire family swore it to each other a thousand years ago. They pledged to remain together always and forever. But even when you're immortal, promises are hard to keep.

Arriving in New Orleans in 1722, Original vampire siblings Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah Mikaelson believe they've escaped their dangerous past. But the city is lawless, a haven for witches and werewolves unwilling to share territory. The siblings are at their mercy…especially after Klaus meets the beautiful and mysterious Vivianne. Her impending marriage is key to ending the war between the supernatural factions—and Klaus's attraction to her could destroy the uneasy alliance. As Elijah works toward securing a piece of the city for his family, and Rebekah fights her unexpected feelings for a French captain, will Klaus's volatile desires bring their world crashing down—and tear them apart for good?

Review

I was so excited when I saw that there was going to be some books based on The Originals, I love the show and enjoyed The Vampire Diaries books. However I was skeptical that this book would live up to the show and my high expectations esp as the characters were derived from the vampire diaries and first seen in the show before getting their own spin off series. This book is the first of three a prequel to the tv series. I shouldn't have been. I could not put it down it was just so good.

Even if you do not know much about the Mikaelson family the book does a good job on catching them up on their history.  With Julie Plec (the creator of the show) at the helm it is not a surprise that the characters in the book match their tv counterparts. Considering their situation and their history I still find it so interesting how different they are. Throughout the book we have chapters from Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah as they go about their own different missions to help cement New Orleans as their home. Of course each has situations that lead to trouble and misfortune, after all the Mikaelson family never have things all that easy.
Often bringing it upon themselves.

I was surprised to enjoy each of the POV's and their individual storylines. I am a huge Klaus fan (Who isn't?) and admire Elijah's qualities and his old fashioned ways, however Rebekah i usually have a hard time liking. I found them all to be reliable narrators and was glad that I got to dip in and out of each of their heads. I found Elijah in particular enjoyable to read, It was nice to see inside his head and understand his thinking more.

The writing is not the best and not as well polished as some people may like, however this did not detract from my enjoyment in any way. There is plenty going on to keep you interested even with a slightly slow start. There is action, scandal, romance , betrayal and more than a few bitter sweet and heartbreaking moments. By the time I got to 70%, I was willing myself to read slower, I just did not want it to end. I cannot wait for the next instalment.

I would recommend this book to fans of The Vampire Diaries or The Originals shows. Even if you have not watched The Originals show i think you would enjoy it.

Review

This book was on my anticipated 2014 releases list and I was so excited to get the chance to read it early. The wait was trying my patience to the maximum. Only problem now is I can’t wait for it to be released so I can pester everyone I know into reading it, so I can discuss how awesome it is with them. The first part of that challenge is making sure they have read book one which is one of my top reads of the past year.  It is rare that after only two books in a series that it will get a place in my top ten series. However this series is firmly in my top two now. It is even rarer that I find it next to impossible to find any faults with a book. This book has got me there too.

Book one Soul Reunion which my review of is linked above under the cover image, focuses on Goran and Maya, it introduced us to this wonderful world of soul takers and death dealers and some important side world story lines that continue through this book minimally. This book focuses on Archer and Sarah’s story, which is beautiful.

Archer was in book one more as a watching from the bleachers character, he of course is the main male feature in this book and he does not disappoint. I know a lot of readers like Archer for his wit and his playboy ways, he undergoes a lot of growth throughout the book and although some might not like the way he ends up. I think it’s perfect a transformation through love and if were all honest it’s what most men claim to have went through from being a playboy to tied down with a wife LOL. My only quibble is that I think perhaps he might have struggled getting there a bit tougher leaving his playboy side behind. Even if perhaps not through want but through fear of changing so much so quick after all he’s had hundreds of years and many women. However that is me being very tough and love does change us all.

I adored Sarah, she was so realistic and relatable, perhaps helped by the fact she is human. The situation we find her in can’t help but tug on your heart strings. She is a loving, caring, devoted mother and housewife, who is undervalued and downtrodden by her husband. You know she and Archer are going to be together from before you even open the book. However the path they take is unpredictable and fitting. She undergoes momentous changes in such a short time and even though the book covers only a couple of weeks. I feel that her actions, thoughts and feelings are realistic. She transforms into a strong, confident women and you cannot help but admire her.

I loved Lorraine’s writing style when I read the first in the series. I think her writing style has grown. She has a talent for drawing you in and holding your attention. She is not overly descriptive but she fleshes out all of her characters so well, filling the story with twists and turns and action. I cannot help but find her writing as beautiful as the story she is telling.  Her strongest talent is definitely her characters. I definitely went through all the emotions with this book and even had a few blubbering full on teary moments. I was also delighted that my favourite character from book one made a return Sable. I hope one day he will get his own story.

If you like paranormal romance books, this series is a must. Even if you like just one or the other or fancy something different to your normal read, I am sure you would not be disappointed with this series. There is a little bit of everything for everyone. I definitely think that Lorraine Sears, is an author to watch and one who should be in your collection or at least on your TBR. Soul Reflection is not released till 13th  of  December so plenty of time to catch up with book one.  Lorraine is writing book four at the moment as part of NanoWrimo and yet again the thought of waiting feels like a punishment. I cannot wait to read book three especially with the ending of this one.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ever find it hard to talk about yourself? Yeah, I have that problem, too. I have been married to my soulmate for 8 years, who wouldn't pick up a book unless promised that it was filled with pictures. I have a beautiful 7 year old daughter, Riley, that talks too much and has a very vivid imagination. I have no clue where she got those traits. My step-son, Hayden, is 16 and very into football and hunting. I am a writer of paranormal suspense romance. If you enjoy a great love story with a massive amount of drama about angels, demons, ghosts, vampires, witches and fairy tale creatures brought to life through a twisted mind, then you might just enjoy reading my work.

The King by J.R Ward Review by Rinny

****Disclaimer ***** - I was provided with a free paperback copy from  LITTLE, BROWN BOOK GROUP in return for an honest review.

THIS BOOK IS THE 12TH IN THE BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD SERIES (ADULT PARANORMAL ROMANCE). I WILL DO MY BEST TO KEEP THIS REVIEW SPOILER FREE. The series focuses on a society (the "Black Dagger Brotherhood") of vampire warriors who live together and defend their race against de-souled humans called Lessers.

Blurb

J.R. Ward's # 1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood continues as a royal bloodline is compromised by a grave threat to the throne.

Long live the King…

After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle--with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything--and everyone--at risk.

Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response--or the distance it creates between them.

The question is, will true love win out... or tortured legacy take over?

Intro

Hey everyone, I finished this book a couple of days and have had to take a few days just to collect myself before reviewing. Even now as I type looking at my notes I just can’t figure out what to write. So before I start a detailed review (hopefully spoiler free). I have to say if you close a book tears streaming down your face and see this

You know you have read a good book LOL. Sticky page tabs are my little treasure chests of my book loving obsession. So now on to the review.

Review

You know that feeling when you slip into clean bedding? No? What about the feeling when after a long hard day you slip into a nice warm bubbly bath? No? Okay I'm sure you'll get this one ... You know when you curl up with a cup of tea, chocolate (beverage and snacks of your choice) and a new book full of possibilities? YES!! Well that is the comfy, cozy heavenly familiar feeling I get when I know I'm going to dip into the Black Dagger Brotherhood series again. When I sat down this book I was full of anticipation and a little doubt at the same time. A couple of the books in the series I've had a rough time with but yet again J.R Ward sucked me in and sucker punched me with a whole load of in your face awesomeness.

As you can see from the blurb above. We are not only returning to Caldwell and the brothers, (which if you’re like me and have been following them from the beginning adore) we are revisiting/continuing with Wrath and Beth as the main characters in this book. As normal not only do we have our main twosome, the other brothers (although not as a focus and more like guest appearances) we have our side characters and plots. In this book we continue Xcor/Layla, Assail/Sola, Trez/Selena/ his arranged mating, John Matthew/his blackouts, IAm and we also gain an insight into Wrath's parents. There is also a few how to put it bench characters that we see again in this book such as Saxton, Lassiter and new character S'Ex.

J.R Ward's writing style for me is hard to describe. To me it is beautiful, familiar and enjoyable. She is one of the wittiest author's I know. Her books never fail to have at least a bucket of chuckles and a couple of handfuls of side splitting laughter. This book was not an exception especially when it came to IAm and Boo still smiling now thinking of that pair. She is also an author that I find hard to review not because I find her books bad. She does so many good things and makes me feel so many feels I struggle not to include spoilers. I always by the time I close the cover have went through a range of emotions, have a handle of favourite scenes and many favourite quotes. This book did not disappoint me even with the high expectation I have when reading her work. One minute I was laughing the next I was crying like a little baby or wanting to punch my pillow lol. The pop culture references worked for me especially Miley Cyrus and Doctor Who i was chuckling like the Cheshire cat.

Some people might dislike a series with so many characters but I don't. I like how that we have so many new and old people to get to know things do not get boring. Although it’s a bad thing at times especially if you have one particular favourite brother mine being Rhage you don't see a lot of them or any of them sometimes which can suck. However that leaves you to attach yourselves to other new/old characters and bam your attachment to this wondrous world is cemented even more.

As much as I enjoy the multiple POV'S and branches of different stories it can be a struggle at times. I just could not bring myself to care or feel like I wanted to be in-vested in Assail and Sola the only reason their parts in the book did not make me want to punch stuff was Sola's grandmother. She was a breath of fresh air. I also hate myself but Xcor and Layla meh! Again I found myself reading faster and faster just to get by them. However Trez and Selena oh my days I did not see that coming (I am beyond glad it did/is), I am invested and Trez you little devil!! Rhage has company on his pedestal lol. Getting to know Wrath's parents and into their heads was a delight. Overall the many plots as always done beautifully even if you are not invested in each one they tie in and J.R Ward guides us through seamlessly in her own way. As always our main couple's story is played out with twists and turns, highs and lows. Our side plots and the general foundation of the series leave us with just enough questions and intrigue to have us wanting more. Even with the odd sub plot you might not be fully interested in. Some of the Beth/Wrath plot really hit close to my heart and that made it even more emotional for me. In a strange way it also gave me a sense of peace and renewed faith. Very Bizarre but there you go.

The one thing I find J.R Ward achieves higher than most is that even side or bit part characters are well rounded. I mean that you are not just getting some half fleshed character in the book. They could step out and take the mantel as a fully-fledged character. Even Saxton's god awful father did not just seem like ink on a sheet of pa-per too me. I could see him as clear as day, even if I did not like what I saw.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. I have had an up and down relationship with the series of late. This book even with its mild cons for me has put it back at the top of my best series list. The only issues I had with this book are: Where are the Lessors? Where is the big fight scenes? There was not enough action in regards to the lessors and the brothers for me. There was not a real villain this time the "bad guys" felt a little washed out. Assail and Sola i just can't jump on that train and care about either. Slightly predictable at times. I would and have recommended this series over and over again till I have been blue in the face. I would continue to do so with this book. If you haven't tried this series before please PLEASE do try it and if you have but gave up it is WRATH and BETH part two what are you waiting for?

So i think I have done pretty well with not having too much spoiler content? So as a reward I am going to include my favourite (one of many) quote from this book.

"Well, too bad, boys ---- life wasn't an epi of Doctor Who. And you know what? The idea that pair ___ as well as every other male in the house ---- would always defer to Wrath made her even more pissed off. "  (Beth page 78)
