Touching Fate by Brenda Drake

Aster Layne believes in physics, not psychics. A tarot card reading on the Ocean City Boardwalk should have been a ridiculous, just-for-fun thing. It wasn’t. Aster discovers she has a very unscientific gift—with a simple touch of the cards, she can change a person’s fate. Reese Van Buren is cursed. Like the kind of old-school, centuries-old curse that runs in royal families. Every firstborn son is doomed to die on his eighteenth birthday—and Reese’s is coming up fast. Bummer. He tries to distract himself from his inevitable death…only to find the one person who can save him. Aster doesn’t know that the hot Dutch guy she’s just met needs her help–or that he’s about to die. But worst of all…she doesn’t know that her new gift comes with dark, dark consequences that can harm everyone she loves. Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Excerpt from TOUCHING FATE

The spell was broken when some partiers ran up the beach screaming and laughing. Aster turned in the direction of the noise and spotted Reese standing there. He waved. A moronic move, he reprimanded himself. Strolling up the beach James Bond-style would have been better, but instead, struggling in the sand, he headed for her. He decided if she moved toward him as well, it would be proof that she was attracted to him. Aster spun around and faced the ocean again. Reese stopped. She was still angry with him. Just when he made up his mind to leave her alone, she started down the beach toward him. “Hi,” she said, staring up at him. The golden specks in her eyes were like stardust glinting in the low-lying sun. “What are you doing here?” “Leah invited Jan, and he brought me along.” “I see.” “Well, I didn’t put up a struggle. I have to admit, I was hoping to see you.” He held out the aster. “This is for you. A peace offering. One simple flower can mean so much more than a bunch, don’t you agree?” A shocked expression crossed her face, and Reese thought he had blown it. But then she gave him a sweet smile and took the flower from him. “Stolen ones are even better.” “Well, in all honesty, it was a spur-of-the-moment decision. A gentleman doesn’t court a lady without bringing a gift.” “So you’re courting me?” She tried unsuccessfully not to smile. It was rather fetching, her pink glossed lips twitching at the effort. “You don’t even know anything about me.” “Well, that is the point of dating, isn’t it? To get to know each other?” “I’m not sure.” When the silence between them got uncomfortable, she lowered her head and picked at the stem of the flower. “Not sure, huh?” This girl was a hard nut to crack. Reese got an idea. “How about we play a game?” She looked back up at him. “What kind of game?” “One where I tell you something about me, then you tell me something about yourself.” “Sure, why not?” She twirled around and padded across the beach, lifting up sand with her toes and flicking it into the air in front of her. “You go first.” “All right, then,” he said, keeping pace with her. “My family lives in a castle just outside of Amsterdam, complete with towers and turrets. It’s been in the family for generations. We only live in a few rooms. The rest of the place is open for tours. It helps pay for the upkeep and taxes.” “Really?” She knotted her fingers behind her back. “Does that mean you’re royal?” “No. But my father is a count.” He hated talking about his lineage. “It’s just a title,” he said, as if it wasn’t a big deal, which it wasn’t, at least to him. “That’s pretty awesome,” she said. “Now you.”

Excerpt

“Go ahead and do it.” Zo’s legs buckled beneath her.
Gryphon let her sink to her knees on the cold earth.

“You can throw my body into the river when you’re done.”
The Allies watched the river. Someone would know Tess was
alone. Commander Laden would send a team to retrieve her.
The Ram would move south and the Wolves, with the help
of the Allies, would be prepared to fight. Tess would be free
before the end of this year.

She would.

Joshua joined Zo on the ground and put an arm around her.

“Don’t worry, Zo. Gryphon’s not going to kill you.”
Joshua looked up at Gryphon for reassurance.

“The chief will want to question her.” Gryphon frowned.
“But I’ll speak for her, Joshua.”

“You’ll speak for her?” Joshua jumped to his feet. He had
to crane his neck to meet Gryphon’s cold eyes. “You’ll speak
for her!” He shoved him in the chest with both hands. Gryphon
didn’t even sway from the contact. Joshua pushed him again and
again until his shoving turned to full-on punching. Gryphon just
stood there and took it, watching Zo with a hollow expression.
They all knew what would happen if Gryphon took her back.

Zo couldn’t stand it any longer. “Joshua, stop.” She used
a low tree branch to help her stand. The muscles in her back
throbbed from Gryphon’s rough handling. “I can speak for
myself.”

The poor kid dropped to the ground. His head hung between
his knees, he grabbed two fistfuls of his own red hair.
Zo stepped toward Gryphon. “Send the boy away. For his
own sake.” Zo was in no position to make demands, but the
prospect of losing her life made her bold. She wouldn’t be a
victim any longer.

Gryphon studied her through the curtain of his dark hair.
“He has a right to stay.”

Zo stepped closer until their toes almost touched and the
smoke of her breath reached his dimpled cheek. Her voice
barely carried over the sound of the river. “Kill me here. Don’t
hand me over to the chief’s guards.” The image of the Gate
Master entered her mind. “Please.” Her bright blue eyes met
his. The time for submission had passed.

Gryphon shook his head, his jaw set.

“What?” She shoved him. “Too much of a coward to do the
job yourself? Aren’t you a Ram?” She had to get him angry.
No one would know to help Tess if Zo’s body didn’t end up in
that river.

Gryphon tensed.

Joshua got up from the ground and put a hand on his
mentor’s chest while looking at Zo. “That wasn’t a great thing
to say,” he forced a whisper through his teeth. “I think you
should let me do the negotiating from now on.”

Gryphon pushed Joshua’s hand away. The wrap around his
wounded shoulder was dark with fresh blood. The bandage
needed replacing. “Why did you come to the Gate when you
knew we kill your kind?” he asked.

Zo chose her words carefully. Tess’ life depended upon
them. “Why are you so convinced I’m a Wolf?”
“The Wolf I captured had that same mark on his shoulder.”

Zo opened her mouth to speak but no words came. The
mark of the Allies was a well-kept secret. She wouldn’t be the
one to divulge it. “The waxing moon is a common symbol of
hope. I’m surprised you’ve never seen it before.”

“You look like a Wolf too.” Gryphon’s face colored and he
looked away.

Zo sighed inwardly. It always came back to her cursed face.

“Either kill me or don’t. Nothing I say will sway you.” She
folded her arms and showed him her back. It was the ultimate
sign of disrespect inside the Gate. She braced herself, ready
for him to strike her, but nothing happened.

A lifetime passed before she heard the crunch of his
approaching footsteps.

Gryphon walked around to face her. This was it. Tonight
she would join her parents on the other side of this cruel life.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Please let Tess
be safe. Please let her not mourn my death. Let Commander
Laden find her.

Warm hands clamped down on her tied wrists.

Zo’s eyes shot open and all of her fears raced back in one
swift, agonizing moment: torture, no body for Laden’s men to
find, Tess alone, the Gate Master. “No, no. Don’t take me back
there. Please!” her voice slipped and cracked. “Please! I’ll do
anything! Just don’t take me to the Gate Master!”

Gryphon pressed the blade of his short sword to her neck. “I
don’t trust you, Wolf,” he whispered. “If you ever do anything
to harm my people, I swear I will end your life in a way that
will make you regret ever surviving this night.”
Joshua ran up and hugged Gryphon. “Thank you! Thank
you!”

Gryphon yanked the band from her wrists and walked away,
leaving Joshua and Zo to stare at his back in the moonlight.
Zo sunk to her knees. “I don’t believe it.” She held her
unbound hands to her cheeks, her jaw hung slack.

Joshua put an arm around her. “Welcome to the family, Zo.
I think he likes you.”

Synopsis

Her fall has just begun. Only his touch can save her from the shift that could destroy it all. Within my blood runs a thing our kind calls the Shadowing Disease. It shadows over, and bends everything to its will.
When the first blood- shift came, it tore through flesh and blood, threatening to bend me, break bone, shatter my mind and entrap my heart with its honeyed, seductive poison. It came with vicious intent, moving my thoughts and altering me forever. The shift has caused a rift within me. No one was safe when it entrapped me in its claws of foul lust.
But I have the only antidote against the evil that becomes me - his touch alone has the power to release the spurs of sweet darkness that clung on for dear life. I knew what I had to do; the desperation pulled my mind with the deep determination of a hungry predator. By the time the revelation raised me from the dark dungeon of my bounds - it might have been too late.

"I love to swim, fight for the trees, and am a food lover who is driven by my passion for life. I dream that one day my stories will change the lives of countless teenagers and have them obsess over the world literacy can offer them instead of worrying about fitting in. Never sacrifice who you are, it’s in the dark times that the light comes to life."

Carlyle used writing as a healing tool and that is why she started her very own writers support event - SAIR bookfestival.

"To be a helping hand for those who strive to become full times writers, editors, bloggers, readers and cover artists - it’s a crazy world out there you don’t have to go it alone!"

Excerpt One

My makers would say I was created for revenge. I say, I was born to prove them wrong. I defied the Council and its Keepers.  Fought back against the dark magic of our enemies, but I am afraid it had come at a cost.            Inflicted with the dark disease, I was lost in every possible way; and they were wrong – death does not bring you your true purpose. After death, I am more misplaced than ever, but only because I am immune to guidance. I relive my darkest moments over and over again, just to remind myself of who I am.
I am the destined one. The haltered. For me, there is no love and no release, only destruction; but I am on a path to be free of its burden. I do love and I will have it, absorb it and never, ever, let all its enchanting affections go. In order to be with love, there is only one path to lead me there; through this war. But nothing and no one knows what awaits on the other side, or what lies have been afflicted upon us about the after. Remorse is an infection I no longer want. I had made apocalyptic mistakes, and will probably keep on faltering forward. It has become my only direction in a reality where there is none. To him, there is no him, if there is no me. He is bound to me, and I hated it more than I will ever confess. His cross to bear is me, and to be that – to be this – is a curse I must fight.
When the first true blood-shift came, it tore through flesh and parted blood, threatening to bend me, break bone, shatter my mind and entrap my heart to become its will. It comes with vicious intent, moving my thoughts and touching me with a cutting effect from the inside. It has many ways of bleeding out, and when it releases, there is nothing I can do to stop it. No one is safe when it entraps me in its claws of foul lust. Corrupt, damnable, depraved, destructive, hideous, demonic; your kind would call it many things. I have a weapon against the profane that becomes me – his touch alone has the power to release the talons of a sweet darkness that clings on for dear life. It has one trigger – my guilt. I can change it if only I can take the leap, surrender myself utterly. I am ready with all of me, for all of him.
I know what I have to do, the desperation of it pulls my mind with the unfathomable determination of a ravenous predator. I let it sink in hard and true. I feel the swell of the fight fill me with a bitter sweetness, and with a glorious soothing pain that tears my mind from the disease which transforms me. My loss has become my fight as I watch it all wither away. But, I will never stop fighting. I am my own destiny; my destiny is to be with him. And the Truth-seekers of this prophecy will not take it lightly.
Everything else becomes Evanescent.
~ Ava.
