About ALICE IN NO-MAN'S-LAND:

When her escape pod falls to earth, crashing in Ypsilanti Bloc, privileged seventeen-year-old Alice Walshe is dashed from the wonderland of wealth and prosperity into a ruined, walled city overrun with militias, gangs, and even cannibals. On top of this horror, her younger brother’s escape pod is missing.

Alice isn’t naïve – she’s always known blocs like Ypsilanti exist, left behind after a foodborne illness ravished the country decades earlier and left pockets of severe urban decay in its wake. Men like her father - a major player at Cerulean Holdings - renew the devastated blocs and bring stability back into the areas. But, Ypsilanti is even worse than the tales she’s heard, and rumor has it the bloc is faced with the threat of extermination by Cerulean, not renewal.

Trapped within Ypsilanti’s borders and left for dead, Alice teams up with a pair of teen scavengers who tracked the wreck of her pod. Despite their rough exterior and vulgar speech, they’re her only option for navigating the hostile and violent environment of Ypsilanti, finding her brother, and getting out of No-Man’s-Land alive.

Excerpt :

I knelt down, looking into the culvert. A trickle of water ran out of the pipe at a steady pace so it had an opening somewhere on the other side but it was too dark to see it. I reached in and felt around the inside. It was wet and slimy.
Will waiting improve your situation?
My instructor’s words came back to me...which one had it been? Mr. Baxter, maybe? He’d said it as though it were a commandment, at the time, a facilitator law. He’d meant during a business deal, of course, or a renewal project...not something like this, though I found it did still apply. I could wait all night – the pipe wouldn’t get any wider.
Getting down on my belly in front of the pipe, I stuck my head inside. There was just enough room in there to move my arms and kind of walk myself forward using my elbows. It seemed smaller on the inside, though, and it quickly trailed off into inky darkness.
It's the only way, I thought. It has to come out inside the compound, that's the only reason for it to be here. I can fit, and so can Cody. We can use it to get back out, too. Night is falling, most of them will be asleep soon. This is our best chance.
I pushed forward with my feet, squirming further into the pipe until my toes touched the concrete and my body blocked out most of the light from behind me. I could hear the rain thumping down somewhere up above, and the hollow hiss of it coming from somewhere in the distance up ahead.
Instinctively I turned to look back and hit my head on the wall of the pipe hard enough to make my eyes water. I tried to turn my body and couldn't, panic rising in my chest.
Stay calm...
Trapped, I tried to squirm backward, back the way I’d come but my shirt bunched up near the small of my back and I got jammed. I tried to look back again, and again I bashed my head on the interior of the pipe.
Calm down...calm down...
I made myself stay still and take a deep breath. I held it, willing my heart to slow down.
You can't turn around, but you can still move. You can move forward.
I shifted position, getting my right elbow in front of me and then rocked forward on it, dragging my body further into the pipe. I did the same with the other elbow, and moved forward again.
There...I can do this.
Cold water from the other end riled down, soaking the front of me, but it helped slick the slime covered tube to let me slip through more easily. I shimmied myself, slowly and deliberately, forward through the dark as a muted crack of thunder boomed overhead.
I can do this...

Welcome to my tour stop for The Intergalactic Adventures of Queen Bea by Jeanne Gransee Barker. This is a young adult sci-fi. The tour runs February 16-27 with reviews, author interviews, guest posts and excerpts. Check out the tour page for more information.

About the Book:

Everything she’d ever known was a lie. Now Bea must find the courage to trust her own voice to save not only herself — but an entire planet.

At almost 15, late-bloomer Bea Parker has just discovered that her aunt, uncle and cousins—the only family she’s ever known—aren’t actually related to her and don’t know anything about her birth parents. Then a strange, high-tech device shows up in her room in the middle of the night with a note promising answers about her shadowed past. This alien technology takes her on a journey that forces her to leave behind Earth, and everything she knows, to meet her destiny.

About the Author:

I discovered science fiction when I was four. My father loved Star Trek, the original series. Every Friday night he’d make a big deal of getting the house quiet so he could hear the TV. The importance of it drew me in. And then I was hooked on other worlds, molecules being scrambled and reformed, and meeting totally logical aliens. As I grew older and continued to watch, I loved the idea that a story could explore our contemporary dilemmas couched in two-tone faces or hidden with green skin. Science fiction was the “gateway genre” that led me to fantasy and paranormal fiction.

I began my first novel at age 12. I still have the ring binder with the hand-written pages of OOTG-1 (that stands for Out of the Galaxy)—the story of the first manned expedition to venture forth beyond our galaxy. Alas, after about thirty pages my hand got tired and the crew never left the Milky Way. But that experience sparked a lifelong love of writing which  has continued through my school days to the present.

When I'm not enjoying the alternate universes of my written creations, I live, work, and play  Seattle, Washington.

Excerpt:  Chapter 16: Being the Mouse

Bea had gone back inside and crawled into bed. Every time she started to doze, she imagined she could hear the viewer calling to her. She noticed every twitch of her muscles, felt each ragged breath. Her eyes were hot and dry, her head throbbed, and her limbs were made of lead.
When she finally did drift off to sleep the dream had come, worse than ever. A chill went down her spine as the familiar voices began to speak.
“We
have
found
her.”
One long, cloaked arm reached for her. This time it touched her with a single icy finger. The cold oozed up her arm, cutting through the skin, moving like it was alive. Gasping for breath, she sat up, cold but sweating.
The sun was rising. She could hear the next-door neighbors getting in their car. People just beginning an ordinary Saturday. Then she remembered the scratch on her arm, probably the reason for this version of the nightmare.
The fear from last night’s alien encounter reignited. What if she got some sort of alien infection?
Bea got out of bed on shaky legs and walked to the bathroom. She pulled out the antibacterial liquid, put her arm over the sink, and poured it on the small scratch. She kept squeezing the bottle until it released nothing but air.
“Hey, Howard Hughes.” The sound of Patty’s voice made her jump. “You trying to drown that or what?”
“Oh, I guess I just wasn’t paying attention.” Bea put the empty bottle back in the medicine cabinet.
“I’m pretty sure nobody ever died from a paper cut,” Patty said, making her way past Bea and into the bathroom.
“Ha, yeah.” Bea forced a weak laugh.
“What are you doing up so early on a Saturday anyway?” Patty asked, yawning.
“Oh, I’m going over to Calvin’s. You know, more stuff on the project.”
“Geez, Bea, it’s like your brain has been taken over by science or something,” Patty said.
“That is totally not funny!” Bea snapped.
“Gah, it was just a joke…” Patty looked at Bea. “... or maybe not.” All of Patty’s humor evaporated. She gave Bea a little shove out into the hall and closed the door in Bea’s face.
The whole time she was dressing, Bea was on the verge of hyperventilating. She pulled on the same jeans as yesterday and an old school sweatshirt. She let her sleep-twisted hair fall where it might. She didn’t grab her hat or her gloves. She couldn’t even manage to zip her parka.
The whole way to Calvin’s, she kept pushing up the jacket sleeve to check the scratch. It was redder, wasn’t it? Maybe it was beginning to swell? How would she explain this at the emergency room?

Teaser Tuesday #3 by Kimmy

Welcome to this weeks Teaser Tuesday
by Kimmy.

Lets hope these random sentences are enough to tempt you into buying this book!

The Forever Watch

First pick - Page 60:

The bell in the bell tower rings, announcing it is noon.  White-walled compounds open their gates, releasing children seven to nine years old from their morning classes, and they amble along the roads and paths back to their homes, where their keepers are waiting for them.

Second pick - Page 174:

She thumbs the chemical spray in her gloves.  A cloud of caustic, toxic gas billows toward him.  She has him now.  She-  His shoulder crashes into her abdomen and forces the breath out of her.  His tackle powers them both through the air.  He slams her down into the ground, and her spine cracks.

Summary:

Maisie Danger Brown just wanted to get away from home for a bit, see something new. She never intended to fall in love. And she never imagined stumbling into a frightening plot that kills her friends and just might kill her, too. A plot that is already changing life on Earth as we know it. There's no going back. She is the only thing standing between danger and annihilation.

From NY Times bestselling author Shannon Hale comes a novel that asks, How far would you go to save the ones you love? And how far would you go to save everyone else?

Review:

A completely new author to me, found this book on Netgalley.  The cover caught my attention immediately, then after reading the blurb, I knew I had to read the book!

Haters gonna Hate, but I really enjoyed this book.  The story was just so fun and filled with sci-fi action and excitement.  Our heroine Maisie gets to experience it all.  Maisie isn't your everyday average hottie, she has flaws.  Her life changes dramatically, she embraces the changes, grows, learns and becomes the heroine.  There is nothing about Maisie you won't fall in love with.  There are many other characters in the book, all with different personalities and blend well into the storyline.

It is definitely a re-reader.  I just wish that it was made into a series.  Maisie is a really interesting character.  Perhaps if we are lucky enough, we might get some more Maise 'Danger' Brown adventures!?!

Congratulations to Shannon Hale, may you have many future successes!
